SRT Awards College Scholarships

MINOT, N.D. – SRT is pleased to announce the winners of college scholarships to outstanding area students. Out of nearly 70 applications, four winners were awarded the SRT College Scholarship and each receive $1,500 towards their college tuition. The SRT $2,500 Technical Scholarship winner was also selected.

“SRT encourages students to apply for our scholarships because while the financial assistance is helpful, these students deserve to be recognized for their hard work,” said Steve Lysne, SRT General Manager/CEO. “The applicants are always impressive every year. With an emphasis on community and volunteer activities, we have seen many of these students become successful young adults and we like to think our scholarship plays a small role in helping them reach their goals.”

Applicants for the $1,500 scholarship were not only judged on their scholastic performance and achievements, but also volunteerism and community involvement. Students were required to write an essay discussing how smart devices and tech gadgets have impacted their high school learning experience in a positive way.

The SRT Technical Scholarship also required students to submit their volunteerism and community involvement, scholastic performance, and an essay describing their plans for a future career in telecommunications or a computer technology related field. Additionally, a letter of recommendation from a community member or educator was required. This scholarship is also unique in that it can be awarded to a graduating high school senior or an undergraduate student currently enrolled in a two-year or four-year college.

The 2019 SRT $1,500 Scholarship recipients are:

  • Grace Bachmeier – TGU-Granville High School
  • Chase Driscoll – MLS-Mohall High School
  • Trent Hunskor – Newburg United High School
  • Benjamin Van Berkom – Des Lacs-Burlington High School

The 2019 SRT $2,500 Technical Scholarship winner is Ethin Probst, a Computer Science and Information Technology major who will be transferring to Minot State University in fall 2019.

Scholarship recipients will be honored at the SRT Youth Awards, a special luncheon with the SRT Board of Directors and Executive Staff at SRT Headquarters (3615 N Broadway, Minot) on Wednesday, April 24 at 12pm. Recipients will share their essay, and talk about their plans for the future.

Short Tutorial/FAQ

Question: I recently updated my will to distribute my assets the way I want. That got me thinking about my online assets, like my Facebook account. What can I expect to happen to it when I pass away?

Single Video Settings Answer: You're smart to be thinking ahead about your online assets. Here's how it works with your Facebook account when you pass away:

You can choose to appoint a legacy contact, which is a person you trust who will look after your account if it's memorialized. A memorialized account is a place for friends and family to continue to share memories of you after you've died.

If you don't choose a legacy contact, your account will still be memorialized when requested by close family or friends, but no one will be able to log in, accept friend requests, change the profile photo, etc. To manage your legacy contact, follow these steps:
  1. In the top-right corner of your home page, click the down-arrow and select Settings > Manage Account.

  2. Type in your friend's name and select Add.

  3. To let this friend know you've appointed them as your legacy contact, select Send.
Alternatively, you can choose to have your account permanently deleted when Facebook learns of your passing. Here are the steps:
  1. In the top-right corner of your home page, click the down-arrow and select Settings > Manage Account.

  2. Select Request Account Deletion and follow the instructions from there.

Stay Alert

Download Graphics to View Scammers know how hard it is to say no to people you love, and they take advantage of that fact to trick people into giving them money.

Here's how it works: The scammer uses a fake identity to pose as an online love interest, a practice known as catfishing. The "relationship" progresses, and at some point the scammer manufactures an "emergency" such as a medical expense and asks for money to help pay for it. Or, if you request to meet, the scammer asks for money to cover travel expenses.

The New York Times reports this phenomenon cost Americans $143 billion in 2018 — a number significantly higher than the $50 million reported just three years prior — and people between the ages of 40 and 69 experience these scams at the highest rate. The interactions often happen on dating sites such as Match, Tinder, and OkCupid, but can also occur on Facebook, other social media sites, and in online games.

Dating sites are starting to use algorithms that detect catfishers. In the meantime, here's how to protect your heart — and your wallet:
  • Take concerns of family and friends seriously.

  • Never send money, gift cards, or other forms of payment to someone you haven't met in person.

  • Never send anything upon initial request. Ask questions about the nature of the person's "emergency" and look for inconsistent answers.

  • Before getting too serious with a potential romantic partner, check out their contact information to make sure it corresponds with a real person.

  • You can also use a reverse image search of photos to confirm that the photo shows up attached to the same name elsewhere online.
Stay safe and don't let scammers ruin your chances for a real romance to bloom this spring.
