New this year, the SRT Board of Directors voted to nearly double the total dollar amount of scholarships given to students in the SRT service area.

The following six students each won a $2,000 SRT General Scholarship:

  • Rose Schiele (Balfour) – Velva High School
  • Wilson Wald (Minot) – Minot High School

Austin Lakefield of Mohall won the $3,000 SRT Technical Scholarship. He will attend Valley City State University and study Career and Technical Education.

“With more than 100 applications this year, we are thrilled to see such great reception from area students,” said Cassidy Hjelmstad, SRT CEO and General Manager. “Year after year, it’s incredible to see the outstanding community stewardship and scholastics, and SRT is so proud to support these students in their next steps after high school.”

Additionally, a local winner of the $2,500 FRS Scholarship has been selected. Tukker Fedje of Bottineau High School was one of 50 selected from a pool of more than 2,000 applicants nationwide. He intends to study Finance at the University of North Dakota.

Logan Weems of Newburg School will represent SRT at the three-day Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. this summer, an opportunity also provided by FRS. He will learn about the telecommunications industry, tour the nation’s capital, and meet with legislative leaders to discuss their experiences in rural North Dakota.

A panel of SRT Board Members and employees judged the applications on scholastic performance and achievements, as well as volunteerism and community involvement. Students were required to write an essay discussing the ways technology has made community service or involvement more accessible.

The SRT Technical Scholarship can be awarded to a graduating high school senior or an undergraduate student currently enrolled in a two-year or four-year college. Applicants were required to submit volunteerism and community involvement, scholastic performance, and an essay describing how they can use their education and technology to reach rural and underserved populations. A letter of recommendation from a community member or educator was also required.

FRS Scholarship applicants were judged on scholastic performance and were required to write an essay about their intended field of study and how it could benefit their rural community.

Minot, N.D. – SRT Communications reached a milestone this week, when the telecommunications cooperative welcomed its 25,000th Internet customer on February 12.

SRT was formed in 1951 to bring telephone service to the rural communities of north-central North Dakota. Forty-five years later, local dial-up internet became available from every SRT phone exchange. In another two years Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) internet was added to SRT’s services. Today the cooperative maintains a 100% fiber network connecting its entire rural service area, as well as the city of Minot and Minot Air Force Base.

“From day one, our mission has been to connect people and bring opportunity to our communities. SRT started with telephone service, one home at a time, and has since evolved to the most advanced technology for high-speed Internet,” said Cassidy Hjelmstad, SRT CEO and General Manager. “We are humbled that 25,000 North Dakotan homes and businesses turn to us for their Internet and are committed to serving their evolving future needs.”

Because SRT is a member-owned telecommunications cooperative, each SRT Internet customer receives the benefits of membership. These include voting in SRT annual elections for the Board of Directors and capital credits paid back to members.

$1500 in SRT and RDFC Grants Support Granville Veterans Memorial Monument

News_GranvilleVeteranMem640x320

MINOT, N.D. – SRT met with members of Granville’s American Legion Post 155 this week to commemorate the newly installed Veterans Memorial Monument in Granville Cemetery. The Rural Development Finance Corporation (RDFC) awarded a $750 grant, which SRT matched with an additional $750, toward purchasing the monument that now stands atop a hill in the cemetery.

Jeff Smette, the Post’s adjutant, said the project was “Legion member Karl Wittstruck’s baby, which got us going. Then it became a matter of keeping after it, and the community got behind us once we got started.”

Contributions from local businesses, organizations, and individuals helped bring total donations to nearly $14,000. The result, Smette said, is a “nice, lasting monument for the community and all veterans, where we can gather and honor those who served.”

The monument was installed on a cement pad where four crosses have marked this ground for years, honoring two World War I veterans and two World War II veterans.

Kristi Miller, SRT Board President, said of SRT’s matching grant, “This monument marks the indelible gratitude we all have for those who have made such profound sacrifice to defend our nation and way of life. SRT is humbled to support our military and is proud to be part of this community coming together for veterans.”

SRT is among the North Dakota rural telecommunication and electric cooperatives that are members of RDFC, a nonprofit finance and development corporation that provides funding for economic development and diversification projects in rural North Dakota. Applications are submitted to RDFC and, if approved for funding, are matched 100% by SRT.
