September Tech Tip: Backing Up and Storing Data

Techtip_backupstorephotos

There are three basic ways to back up important documents and photos:

1.       External hard drives
2.       Flash drives
3.       Cloud based storage

Each option raises a few things to consider. External hard drives and flash drives are a one-time purchase that you place your documents or photos onto via a USB port. Storage size and price vary by brand, so it’s best to research based on your specific needs. Cloud-based storage often charges a monthly fee to house your photos, which are uploaded to the cloud via the internet or an app. Some examples of reputable cloud-based storage include Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, iDrive, pCloud, and OneDrive.

Since none of the options is perfect and all have drawbacks, consider using a combination of two or three options. Hard drives and flash drives have the potential to corrupt or fail over time, while cloud-based storage has the potential of being breached or the company shutting down unexpectedly. Having multiple back-up options such as a cloud-based and physical-based combination is your best way to ensure you always have access to your valuable information. Setting reminders or scheduled backup dates throughout the year minimizes the risk of losing information in the event of a device malfunctioning, getting lost, or being stolen.

August Tech Tip: Scam Prevention

AugTechtip_makingonlinepurchase

When choosing to make a purchase for service or goods online, here are some quick things to consider to protect yourself from falling victim to a scam:

  1. What is the general reputation of the company? Have you heard of them before? If you suspect it to be too good to be true, it likely is.

  2. Have they had security incidents before? A quick Google search can bring up useful information regarding a company. Checking a site such as the Better Business Bureau can help clear up any potential worry about a company’s reputation.

  3. Is their website secure? Does it use https in the web address?

  4. Is it easy to find a way to contact them? Do they have a customer support feature? Websites posing as legitimate storefronts often lack options for contacting them.

  5. How much information is the company requesting from you? To make a simple online purchase you should not need to provide personal details such as a social security number or bank account information.

SRT Customer Service Rep. Receives Minot Chamber EDC Eagle Award

2022_company_eagleawardWE_news

SRT Customer Service Representative Wesley Elkins received Minot Chamber EDC‘s Eagle Award this month. The Eagle Award recognizes excellence in customer service and the recipients must be nominated to receive this award.

Wesley was nominated by a new SRT customer who said, “I am not one to leave reviews good or bad but after dealing with Wesley Elkins that has changed. I have been with a different ISP for 10 years and after struggling with slow internet speeds, dropped connections, etc., it was time for a change. I was dreading the change due to different circumstances […] I had voiced my concerns with Wesley (who was extremely friendly and definitely loves what she does) and she put my mind at ease. I thought about it for the night and called back the next day to get switched. I was hoping to get Wesley but got someone else who got me signed up and scheduled. I would not have done this without the reassurance from Wesley Elkins.”

Congratulations Wesley and thank you for taking great care of our customers!

SRT Donates $500,000 to Trinity Capital Campaign

SRT Check - June 30, 2022- 19202 Print

SRT Communications has donated $500,000 to Trinity Health Foundation’s Capital Campaign in support of Trinity’s new regional healthcare campus and medical district.

The morning of June 30, SRT officials joined Trinity Health on the new campus grounds and presented a ceremonial check for the construction project, currently underway. The hospital and adjoining medical office building stood tall in the background.

“Access to quality health services is crucial to any thriving community, and we are fortunate to have this new regional healthcare campus and medical district in our area,” said Cassidy Hjelmstad, CEO and General Manager of SRT. “Like Trinity Health, SRT is committed to building out state-of-the-art services for communities throughout north central North Dakota. We are proud to support this capital campaign and, more importantly, to partner with Trinity for the future of healthcare in the region.”

SRT’s fiber network forms the foundation of complex critical infrastructure, not only for Trinity’s impressive new regional healthcare campus, but also for government, financial institutions, and two legs of the US Military’s defense triad.

Kristi Miller, SRT Board President, added the perspective of a telecommunications cooperative: “One of the core principles of cooperatives is Concern for Community. We live by this principle every day as we serve the people of North Dakota, and we see this principle in Trinity Health. This significant construction project truly demonstrates Trinity’s drive and commitment to our communities.”

Trinity Health Foundation has committed to raising $15 million through corporate and private donations toward the total estimated construction cost of $500 million. The regional healthcare campus and medical district is projected to open Spring 2023.
