MINOT, N.D. – The 2023 SRT College Scholarship Program applications are now available. Five local scholarships totaling $8,500 will be awarded to students in 2023. National scholarships are also available through SRT’s partnership with the Foundation for Rural Service.

The SRT College Scholarship program awards four $1,500 scholarships. The program evaluates community involvement, school activities, an essay response, and grade point average.

The SRT Technical Scholarship will award $2,500 to one student. This scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors or undergraduate students studying telecommunications or other computer-technology-related fields.

SRT is also proud to partner as a member of the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) to participate in a national scholarship program that can provide local students with scholarships. Students submitting an FRS application are eligible for multiple national scholarship opportunities.

Applications are available online at srt.com/srtcares. FRS Scholarship applications are due February 8 and SRT Scholarship applications are due March 3. Scholarship recipients will be announced in April and an awards luncheon will be held for the winners.

December Tech Tip: Cleaning & Caring for Your Devices

Techtip_CleaningCaringDevices

In a time of heightened awareness for germs, our phones, tablets, and laptops are often overlooked when cleaning and disinfecting. Screens are very dirty surfaces but require extra caution when cleaning. Do not use harsh chemicals like bleach when wiping your screen, but rather a damp cloth with mild soap. Special screen cleaning sprays and cloths are also good options for cleaning screens.

It’s also good to periodically clean out your laptop battery, fan, and wireless router. These elements are great at collecting and trapping dust that can hinder performance over time. Opening the side panel or removing the battery and spraying with a can of compressed air will reduce the risk of the device overheating or malfunctioning.

While you have the can of compressed air out, spray a few puffs into your USB ports and in the grooves of the keyboard to ensure dust and debris aren’t building up and limiting functions. Ports such as USB, headphone, and charging should never have cotton swabs inserted inside of them. The cotton end on a cotton swab can get stuck inside these small ports and cause damage to your device. If necessary, use a toothpick or something with a sharp end if you need to dislodge something inside one of these ports. Dust and lint building up in the charging port can sometimes prevent your phone from getting a good connection, resulting in poor battery life.

Some other general care and maintenance tips for your devices include using a carrying case for laptops and cell phones and reducing exposure to extreme temperatures for all device types. Thermal cycling is one major cause of premature hardware failure. Thus, reducing the number of times your device is exposed to extreme heat or cold will extend the life of your device. Further, if your device is left in extreme temperatures, it is best to allow it to slowly return to room temperature before powering on to reduce the effects of thermal cycling.

October Tech Tip: 5 Easy Tips to Protect Your Data

October Tech Tip: 5 Easy Tips to Protect Your Data

Techtip_5TipsProtectYourData-

The internet can be scary and intimidating at times, but with a few small changes it can become much more manageable. These simple tips will help you feel more secure online:

1. Vary Your Passwords

Don’t use the same password for every account, email, and app. Varying passwords limits the potential for someone to access all your accounts if they have gained access to one.

2. Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication

This simple additional step can make a huge difference when protecting yourself online. Multi-factor authentication can require a text or email to be sent to registered contact information that acts as a second layer of defense.

3. Avoid Using Your Debit Card Online

If possible, it is best to use a credit card rather than a debit card that is linked to your bank account. If your card is compromised, credit cards add an additional level of protection rather than allowing someone access to all the funds in your account. If a credit card is not an option, using a service such as PayPal or other reputable online payment companies can provide the necessary insurance in case of a breach.

4. Limit Information Shared on Social Media

As tempting as sharing personal information with your social network might be, hackers can use the information to gain access to your personal data. Security question answers can often be determined by scrolling through someone’s social media feed, like the name of your pet, your favorite sports team, where you like to travel, or names and/or birthdays of your children.

5. Be Suspicious

When it comes to your personal data, you can never be too cautious. It is best to always be suspicious of anyone or anything asking for information. If you think it seems suspicious, it probably is.

Beware of Phishing Emails

Beware of Phishing Emails

2022_internet_phishing_news
We received a few reports from customers receiving emails with the subject line, “New Update on STR Email.” This is a phishing scam and was not sent by SRT.

What is Phishing?

Phishing is a cyber threat that pretends to be someone you know via email or text messaging. They want sensitive information from you like credit card numbers, usernames, and passwords.

How to Spot Phishing Scams

Look for typos and spelling errors. For example, if an email says, “STR Email” instead of “SRT Email” in the subject line, this is a red flag. Also, always look at the sender’s email address to see if it appears suspicious. Many phishing emails also have a sense of urgency to their message or contain offers too good to be true.

If you receive a suspicious email like this, please delete it right away and don’t click on any links. We’re here for you, and protecting your information is a top priority!

SRT Celebrates National Cooperative Month

SRT Celebrates National Cooperative Month

It’s October, and National Cooperative Month is in the air. Every year as the daylight wanes and nights grow chilly, we reflect with gratitude on the philosophy that inspired our beginnings.

SRT became a cooperative in 1951, when the Verendrye Electric board saw a real need for telephone service in rural north central North Dakota. Since then SRT has grown into the state’s largest telecommunications cooperative.

Roughly 60 years later SRT evolved from telephone to broadband. Once again, our cooperative foundation allowed us to serve another real need: Bridging the digital divide and connecting rural communities throughout our territory with high-speed fiber.

Cooperative Principles

  1. Voluntary and Open Membership
  2.  Democratic Control
  3.  Members’ Economic Participation
  4.  Autonomy and Independence
  5.  Education, Training, and Information
  6.  Cooperation Among Cooperatives
  7.  Concern for Community

As a telecommunications cooperative, SRT is committed to making our region an exceptional place to thrive for everyone. SRT’s fiber provides high-speed internet to cities, towns, and ranches and farms alike, creating fertile ground for business success and quality living.

When your kids are learning and growing for their best future, we’ll connect them at the speed of curiosity.

When you are building a business that forms the backbone of our region, we’ll connect you at the speed of ambition.

And when your artistic side is inspired by the beauty of North Dakota, we’ll connect you at the speed of imagination.

SRT is your cooperative. We will always evolve with technological and human innovation to ensure we always connect you at the speed of life.

Thank you for believing in SRT, and Happy National Co-op Month.
